More than likely. Grandparents and other relatives may not substitute their information for the parent's information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) unless they have legally adopted the student. Even if your parents don't claim you as a dependant on their taxes or if you are not living with them, you still may be considered a dependant by FAFSA. Determine your dependant status with these questions. If you are considered a dependant for the purpose of FAFSA, but are unable to get the information needed from your parents you can learn more about special circumstances

How do I prepare to meet with my advisor?

498 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Feb 16, 2021    Academics Advisor Admissions

Typically students meet with there advisor when they are getting read to register for the next semester of classes. The best way to prepare for this is to have an idea of what types of classes you want to take. If you are in a specific major you can reference the Program Planning Sheets which suggest the best order to take classes in.

Whether you know what classes you want to take or not, it’s also a good idea to see what classes are available and when they take place. The Look Up Classes feature in the Portal is useful for this.  Here is how to use it:

  1. Go to the SUNY Ulster Portal
  2. Go to the Student Resources Tab, down to Advisement and Registration
  3. Click Registration Tools, and click Look Up Classes
  4. Select the term and click submit
  5. Select a subject and click submit
  6. You will now see all the classes available under that subject. You can click on each class to see what days and times they will be availabe at and who will be teaching.

I'm having trouble staying motivated in my remote classes; what can I do?

Because of COVID-19 and the necessity of having many remote classes many students are experiencing low level of motivation. The University of Colorado at Boulder has an article titled, "How to Stay Motivated with Remote Learning".

One tip is to use a study cycle which allowes students to get into a routine. The study cycle is as follows:

  1. Before class, preview the material you'll be covering. Skim the chapter, pay attention to headings and bold words, review chapter summaries and prepare any questions you have.
  2. Attend your class—take notes and ask questions.
  3. Review your notes as soon as possible after class.
  4. Schedule time in your week to study the material again. Review your notes, handouts and any other readings.

Another tip is to set up a virtual study group because study groups can help you stay connected with classmates and improve academic performance. In the Spring 2021 semester SUNY Ulster is offering SGO Study Session every Thursday on Zoom from 6pm to 8pm. Students who attend the study session encourage and help motivate one another. Students in the same class who attend the study sessions also have the option to join a Zoom breakout room to discuss their class. Contact Meg Sheeley at sheeleym@sunyulster.edu for more info and the Zoom link.

What Gen Eds are required at SUNY Ulster?

447 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Feb 19, 2021    Academics Admissions Classes

The amount of Gen Eds that are required varies depending on the type of degree you pursue. For complete information, see the General Education section of our College Catalog.

SUNY General Education Requirement (SUNY GER)

The SUNY-GER is the 30-credit requirement for SUNY baccalaureate, A.A. and A.S. degree recipients, which supports academic excellence as well as student choice, mobility and degree attainment by expecting students to demonstrate achievement of SUNY-wide learning outcomes.

  1. Thirty credits in a minimum of 7 of 10 SUNY-GER areas are required for all students in programs leading to A.A., A.S. and baccalaureate degrees.
  2. The SUNY- GER areas of Mathematics and Basic Communication are required. In addition, Natural Science, Social Science, and the Humanities are strongly encouraged, as these areas are required in nearly all bachelor’s degree general education programs, giving students who complete them the maximum flexibility for transfer options.

These knoweldge areas are Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilization, Humanities, The Arts, Foriegn Langauge, Basic Communication. Along with the requirement of taking credits in at least 7 of the 10 areas, now more than 2 classes from each area will count towards the requirement. Here is a complete list of approved Gen Eds.

General Education Requirements for the A.A.S. Degree

SUNY Ulster’s faculty members have adopted the following General Education requirements for students pursuing Associate in Applied Science degrees: Students must complete 19-21 credits in four of the A.A.S. General Education areas. Areas 1: English and Communications and 2: Mathematics are required. *Courses may be used to fullfill only one category, but multiple courses can be taken from the same category.

Why are classes on a Monday Schedule when it is a Tuesday?

445 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Feb 26, 2021    Academics policies

Because of the amount of holidays on Mondays during the Fall and Spring semester classes that take place on a Monday fall behind compared to those that take place on a Tuesday. In order to even this out, typically one Tuesday after a Monday holiday follows a Monday schedule. What does this mean? You won't have your Tuesday classes, but you will have any classes you would normally have on a Monday.
