Course codes are used by colleges to describe and organize courses in a way that is simple to understand. It's important to know what course codes are because you will see them in places such as your schedule, in Blackboard, and on your transcript. Course codes at SUNY Ulster consist of three letters, and three numbers. The three letters describe the subject. ENG is English, MAT is Math, PSY is Psychology. The three numbers correspond to the level of the course. If the first number is a 0, that indicates a remedial course, if it starts with a 1 that is course is likely meant for freshman and is going to be very general, and if it starts with a 2 it's designed typically for sophomores, and will go more into depth than a 100 level course. The second and third numbers don't necessarily carry any specific order or meaning, though in some cases you may be required to take lowered number courses before higher-numbered ones. For instance, MAT 115 is required before a student can take MAT 160. While this isn't always the case, it's important to remember when planning what courses you want to take.
